The uprisings of the peasants and the squires and their cruel end
The battle for Schladming at July 3rd 1525 was the biggest victory of the rebellions of the German peasant wars. Its motivations included visions of a free and just life before God, as formulated in the visionary writings of Michael Gaismair and the anonymous “24 articles of the commoners” in Salzburg. The jurisdiction of temporal as well as spiritual authorities was strictly and brutally enforced, for all the world to see.
In his lecture, Dr. Wolfgang Maderthaner, historian and former director of the Austrian State Archives, will speak about this year’s historical focus, the 500 year anniversary of the Peasant Wars that were set in motion centrally in the region around the Dachstein massif.
