Suites for violoncello solo (BWV 1007-1012)
Johann Sebastian Bach

The six cello suites by Johann Sebastian Bach are considered a milestone in solo cello literature. They were probably composed between 1717 and 1723 during Bach’s time in Köthen.
Each suite consists of a prelude and a series of dances, such as Allemande, Courante and Sarabande.
The works are characterised by continuous changes of keys and rhythms, variations and inversions, tone colours and moods, they combine technical sophistication with deep emotional expression and are among the most important solo works in classical music today.
